Graphics and images add to your web site’s appearance in many ways other than as visible descriptions of your products.

Colored and Textured Fonts and Backgrounds add dimension and personality as well as expression and taste.  It is very important to include some graphics and images otherwise your pages can become static and boring. But don't over do it. Too much of a good thing will make your page too busy and confuse or turn off visitors. Do experiment but keep in mind the tastes of your potential clients.

The drawback of course is they take longer to load. The Use of alternate text or alternate images is essential so as to not lose the customers interest as he waits for the larger files to load
