Joaquin Rainbow, a Yaqui Indian, was a student of
R.C. Gorman and spent time in
Morocco. His work is atypical southwestern opposed to the stereotypical use of colors by most contemporary Indian Artists of brown and beiges. Because of his time spent in
Morocco, Joaquin's work reflects a middle eastern influence through his choice of vibrant colors and intense symbols and images. Joaquin died in 1988 and many of his pieces are in the collections of Celebrities. While his work is controversial because it is not considered contemporary it is modern and compliments any decor rather than being limited to southwestern or western decor.
Joaquin's images are mature and intense so if you are looking for pictures of cowboys and
Indians or cow skulls you'll be disappointed. But, if you're adventurous in your choices in art you must see this gallery. |

J. Michael Bear is an award winning Indian Artist living
in Albuquerque, NM. While his work encompasses many styles he is exceptional in
watercolors and ink sketch as shown above in his piece "Courtship". J. Michael Bear (1938-1998), an Acoma/Laguna/Sioux Indian, was well known to the Indian art community in Santa Fe and Albuquerque for his mixed-media drawings of sexually explicit depictions of Kiva initiation ceremonies of young men. He executed his drawings in pencil and highlighted parts with acrylic paints. Often, he wrote explanations of the events depicted on the backs of the paintings. His works are signed JBear.
